Workshop on the Legal Aspects of the 'Right to be Forgotten'The Data Protection Regulation proposed in January 2012 by the European Commission would introduce a 'right to be forgotten' into European data protection law. There has been lively discussion about the legal nature of the right to be forgotten, its relationship to other rights and interests, and its implications for society and for the Internet.

On 9 April 2013, CELS brought together a select group of academic experts, to explore the legal issues (particularly those under European Union law) of the proposed right. These included:

  • Jef Ausloos (University of Leuven),
  • Professor Catherine Barnard (CELS, University of Cambridge),
  • Professor Jon Crowcroft (CSaP, University of Cambridge),
  • Dr David Erdos (University of Oxford),
  • Paulan Korenhof (Tilburg University),
  • Dr Christopher Kuner (CELS, University of Cambridge),
  • Nora Ni Loideain (University of Cambridge),
  • Dr Orla Lynskey (London School of Economics),
  • Dr Eva Nanopoulos (University of Cambridge),
  • Professor Radim Polčák (Masaryk University),
  • Professor Giovanni Sartor (European University Institute),
  • Dr Wojciech Wiewiórowski (University of Gdañsk), and
  • Monika Zalnieriute (European University Institute).

A summary of the main points of discussion has now been published, and can been seen on the Past Events page.

This event was arranged with the kind support of Google.
